The City of Santa Clarita, in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, will host its annual “Children Drown Without a Sound” Water Safety Expo on Saturday, May 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This year’s Expo will be held at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center, located at 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway.
It only takes 20 seconds for a child to drown and drowning incidents continue to occur throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. This free, fun and informative event will provide the entire family with the tools needed in case of an emergency.
Local firefighters and lifeguards will help bring attention to water safety by demonstrating pool safety techniques. Hands-only CPR and proper life jacket fitting will also be demonstrated. LACoFD will simulate a poolside rescue of a young drowning victim and will share a 9-1-1 drowning call with attendees. Expo partners will also provide educational activities and information to help local families take the necessary steps to prevent drowning.
In addition to visiting the Expo partners, attendees can also enjoy a diving board demonstration from William S. Hart Union Schools, a water balloon toss with LACoFD firefighters and a discussion with a Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital emergency room doctor about encouraging parents to take steps to avoid a drowning tragedy. Kids will have the opportunity to listen to a story with Stewie the Duck and LACoFD firefighters about learning to swim safely.
Upon entry, each family will be given a passport to fill up with stamps from participating vendors. Families can turn in completed passports for a free gift while supplies last. In-n-Out will have free hamburgers while supplies last and Rita’s Italian Ice truck will have ice and custard treats for purchase.
